Banners: hanging, falling, suspended freely into thin air, are simply enchanting. And, they are cheerful. There’s no way around it! Welcoming us with outstretched arms and delighting our every sensibility is a banner’s sole purpose. Their messages seem to come from up above and hold our attention every time. They remind us it’s time to celebrate, it’s time to gather and be together, in this time. They catch our eye, capture and embrace our hearts, and sweep us up into the happiness of the moment.
I will never forget that first glimpse of the store bought metallic letter banner, hung in celebration, spelling out ‘Happy Birthday’, at a friend’s party. Banners let us know we are special or something special is happening on certain days of the calendar year.
Banners are trending everywhere these days and they aren’t just for parties. Yes, they are used as essential party home decor but they are so much more! They can be found in every size, shape, colour, or material for any occasion or for any sentiment you wish to express; with or without words.
Right now I have three decorative banners hanging up in my home and a few in the works. One is a heart and doily banner which began as a Valentine gift for my husband but still hangs in our media room today. I feel happy every time I enter the room and it sweeps me up into a moment of visual bliss. A heart banner has that much power!
Gone are the days when I conger up “car sales” when pondering the word BANNER - and yet, seeing shiny upside-down triangles flapping in the wind from any car lot grabs my attention every time. Banners can be used for a company name; used as a message of inspiration; useful in contemporary design of child’s room; used to make a personal statement or can be created just for you and for no particular reason at all.
If you want to grab someone’s attention, show them you love them, make them a banner. A banner can say so much with or without words strictly by its design. Make a banner for yourself, someone you love, someone recovering in the hospital. Your gesture will sweep them up and lift their spirits at every glimpse.
If I could think of one down side to banners it would be they remind me a bit of the annual Christmas light jumble. Now, when I create a banner whether for me or for a friend I will package it in a clearly labeled transparent box (up-cycled consumer packaging) folded, accordion style, with each piece folding back and forth over the other, stacked safely and uncomplicated, ready for its next celebration. If I am going to use my creativity to personalize a banner for someone I will make it easy for them to store and use for multiple occasions.
Banners, like any artistic endeavour, can be simple or complicated in design. I make all of my banners over time and never rush their design. Sometimes I know exactly what needs expressing and with a bit of help I can make one in under and hour. Other times the fantasy of it all just doesn’t hit me right away. This is partly why I have them hanging up and in plain sight. Sometimes they will whisper what is next as I explore all possibilities of what needs saying. Whatever my next creative banner will be I begin by letting it hang around me and surround my creativity so that I can bring its celebration to life.
