A few stops I made with my camera today in my neighbourhood. I am noticing that yellow is prominent everywhere I go. I began to observe more and more yellow around me. What is becoming clear to me now is a world without yellow would be peculiar. I tried to imagine a world without yellow in it and all of a sudden I am liking yellow a whole lot more.
I met up with a group of young school boys who allowed me to capture the neon yellows of running shoes these days. When asked why I wanted to photograph the shoes I began to tell them what I was doing and discovering with the colour yellow. I motioned to the advertising in the nearby shopping plaza and told them that very often shops will use yellow in their signage. One boy said, "Yes because money is gold and they want you to spend it."
I came upon some abandoned shoes along my travels that were perfect to photograph - almost as if they were waiting there, just for me to notice them, with their yellow enhancements.
I also met a fellow photo enthusiast on my walk taking a self-portrait. We discussed our hobby and I told him I was focusing on capturing yellow with my camera. Eagerly he pointed out several photographic opportunities for me. I am sure I will run into Phillip again sometime soon with all this glorious weather we are having in late spring. We will have advanced along our separate journeys of photography and share more knowledge and tips about the way we see our world through the lens. What a delight it was to stop and talk and compare notes and thoughts about taking pictures. I have to wonder if the yellow of the sun makes us more gregarious and open to others, for I did hesitate before I approached him. I am so glad I did.
Fire hydrants are now a contemporary yellow mixed among the red and yellow ones of my youth. It amazes me how street signs evolve and change around our neighbourhoods. How do these changes come about? Who decides to change a school crossing from white and black to neon yellow and black? Have you noticed? At the end of my walk even Douglas Coupland tops things off with YELLOW.
